Life insurance basics for smokers
What if I plan on quitting smoking?
Buy life insurance now versus waiting until you quit. You’ll need to be cigarette-free for at least one year before you’ll qualify for non-tobacco pricing. If you wait to buy, you’ll grow older and health issues could raise your term life insurance rates. Protect you loved ones by getting coverage now. If you quit tobacco, you can reapply later to lower your monthly premium.

How do electronic cigarettes affect life insurance rates?
Our advisors will work with you to find the best term life carrier for you as an e-cigarette smoker. Electronic cigarettes are generally considered safer than other tobacco products. If nicotine is detected in your medical exam, most life insurance companies will classify you as a tobacco user and offer you smoker rates. Some will give you non-smoking rates if you use vapor-based e-cigarettes versus heat-based.
Can I be approved if I smoke cigarettes?
Yes, you can get covered. If you smoke, it doesn’t mean that your term life insurance rates will be astronomical. Your tobacco risk class depends on your health and each carrier will assign you the best class possible.
How do smoking cessation products affect life insurance rates?
Smoking cessation products contain nicotine to help wean your body off cigarettes but spare you from the other harsh chemicals found in tobacco. However, because there is nicotine in these products, some life insurance companies will still classify you as a smoker even if you don’t actually smoke anything. But not so fast, there are also insurance companies that will consider you for the non-tobacco risk classes and therefore be given non-smoker pricing. To be offered non-smoker rates, you have to be cigarette-free for at least 12 months.
How does chewing tobacco affect life insurance rates?
Even if you chew tobacco, you can still get life insurance and may even be able to get great non-smoker rates. The qualifications for non-smoker rates for tobacco use vary by carrier. While some will issue non-smoker rates for chew use as long as no cotinine shows up in the medical exam results, others will issue even if it does test positive.
How does marijuana affect life insurance rates?
In recent years, the life insurance industry has been adjusting their views on marijuana use and its risk classifications in an attempt to keep up with societal and legal changes. A big challenge for the life insurance industry is that unlike alcohol and tobacco, there have not been enough studies done on the long-term effects of marijuana usage to determine any definite conclusions in regards to risk of mortality.
Life insurance companies all underwrite marijuana use a little differently. Most marijuana users applying for life insurance will be given a smoker risk class, but there are a few carriers that will offer non-smoker. If you use marijuana, whether medicinally or recreationally, working with an independent agency like Quotacy that has contracts with multiple life insurance companies is going to give you the best chances at getting approved.
