However, we’re rapidly making progress. With the discovery of epidural stimulation – the use of an implant to send signals into the disconnected nerves – people who were once unable to dream of walking again have another opportunity to stand up.
In addition, new discoveries found by researchers and doctors at the University of Louisville are offering even more hope. A research participant who had a complete spinal cord injury six years prior is now flexing his knees and hips, and even standing unassisted, only using his hands to balance.
This revelation shows that the human nervous system has a much greater ability to repair itself than we originally believed. It also makes a strong case for using epidural stimulation as a means to help maintain nerves and muscles, which can then be stopped when the participant regains control.
